I came across this article in the globe and mail…shocking. China has a one-child policy, allowing parents to only raise one child per household. You can only imagine the horrors inflicted to ensure this law is upheld: early/late term abortions, forced sterilization, children left in dumpsters and doorsteps among other devastating means. I am not unaware that this tragedies take place right here in North America with sex-selection being rampant (although not as extreme as the East) but this article came as a surprise that angered me.
“A Chinese official said Monday that New Zealand should consider special compensation to parents of Chinese students killed in an earthquake last month because their loss was magnified under the country’s one-child policy,” Associated Press reports. “Seven students from China have been identified among the 166 confirmed deaths in the quake that devastated Christchurch city on Feb. 22, and as many as 20 others are still missing. Chinese Embassy official Cheng Lei said Monday that Chinese quake victims had lost not just their only child, but also a future breadwinner. He said New Zealand should consider providing additional financial assistance to those families.” Globe and Mail, Wednesday March 15th, 2011.
I may be letting my emotions take precedent here but how dare a country force families to kill the children if they have already born one but then ask another country to provide compensation when that one child was killed by a natural disaster…If that is the mindset that the Chinese government holds then I think they need to provide emotional and financial support for every parent who suffered the loss of a child/children at the expense of a forced and meditated disaster – a ‘one child’ policy.
